My Thirtieth Birthday Deserves a Little Wine

Matt & Julie were incredibly thoughtful, and planned a wine tasting tour for my thirtieth birthday. I had expressed a number of times that I wanted to do something really neat for this birthday, since I'll only be turning thirty once.

So, Julie, Matt, Rashelle, Terri, Tory and myself all went out to Yamhill and had ourselves a little wine. We first stopped at Rex Hill Vinyards, which was fantastic. Our wine curator was splendid and answered all our questions with enthusiasm. She was very knowledgeable and yet very down to Earth. The ambiance of Rex Hill was cozy, Northwestern and rugged...I liked it. I liked the wine too.

Our second stop was at Penner Ash Vinyards, which sat up on a gorgeous hill outside of Newberg. It was a rainy day, so the vinyards were foggy and wet... just stunning. This winery was a bit pretentious, although they prided themselves on using the downhill method of bottling, which is impressive. Instead of pumping the wine into bottles, the system is set up using the flow of gravity. The wine was delightful tasting and as a result, Rashelle bought a bottle of the Pinot Rose'.

Lastly, we ended up at Laurel Ridge Winery. This place had a homey feel to it...everyone wearing jeans and t-shirts. The owner's dogs were in the tasting room, sniffing and greeting people. It was a very comforting way to end the day. In addition, the wine was complex and rich...my favorite. We ended our tasting with a beautiful picnic lunch (packed by Julie), which consisted of cheeses, meats and crackers.
Oh, and another bottle of wine.

  1. Thanks for posting this! We go wine tasting every year for our anniversary and like to try someplace new every year. 2009 found us at Hip Chicks do Wine in the heart of Portland - if you haven't been, you totally should go! Our very favorite winery was discovered on our second anniversary, 2004, in Bend - Maragas. If you guys ever have a chance to head that way, you must stop in, they are amazing.

Anyway, if you had to pick one to do an ooey gooey romantical (but yet keeping in mind who it is that's being ooey gooey and romantical, you know me, I'm so laid back it's scary) date, which one would you choose?
